Home Grown Classic: Super Gus

March 17, 2009 - 11:50 pm No Comments

Hey All,

It’s about that time again where we shell out a new song. This one is a nice jammy one that we later discovered was inspired by a great friend of ours named Mike Jennings. He comes to a lot of our shows and we play a tune called Kankamangus (don’t worry, I’ll post it soon). He loves that song as well as many of our others, so as we were jamming on it we realized who this song belonged to.

So this song, entitled “Super Gus” is named after the one and only Mike Jennings, and I guess you can say it’s his theme song, although he doesn’t know it yet. If you are super jealous, as I know some of you might be since you don’t have a Stem-powered theme song, then perhaps this is something we can discuss (for a small fee of course).  Just kidding…about the fee.

I will report on more news soon, as we have some big things coming up such as the premier of the South Swell Knights Movie this week, which we’re on the soundtrack of. Also, we have our show at Porter Bellys in Brighton this Friday, and that should be an awesome time as always. And, at the same time of the show, we will be broadcasting our song “Like You” on air on WFNX radio 101.7 FM. Pretty Sweeeeeeeeet!

Thank You for Bills, and this is What You Get

Once again I want to say thanks to everyone who came out to Bill’s. This was a great show, and the Band and myself had a great time. Also I know Pete Bartash is thankful for the crew who took the mini journey to go catch him rock out the drum kit over at Copperfields with Rich Kuhn later in the night.

We never stop working at Stem Co. and we got more stuff coming on the horizon. One of these things is another Free, 3 hour Show at Portobellies in downtown Brighton, which all are welcome for the “All Stem All Day”. (ASAD)

Another thing we have been working on is getting recordings of the songs we play all the time. Nothing  professional, but we are working on getting them out for your listening pleasure for those of you who only have the Album, and just can’t get enough of the boys. In fact we are working on another Ear to the Door volume which will have these tasty treats on it that you will be able to download here and pick up at a show.

On that note here is another great tune, called What You Get. We wrote it around the same time as Lost Love, and Nervous, which came after we recorded the album . It’s a grooving rock tune with a kick ass ending. Enjoy… If this is a song you want to hear live at Portobellies then let us know.

New Song: Do Something

February 7, 2009 - 11:43 am 2 Comments

Ok, So this time I have a real treat for you Stem fans. I have been mixing tracks from recordings and we have some of those tunes that you have been wanting.  If you have seen us play live, at Portobellies or at any other show, you  may have heard us play this song.  This song is one of our happy sounding ones, though the lyrics aren’t that happy.  Now you can hear one of your favorite Stem songs without having to wait for a show.

Its called “Do Something“, though we have considered changing the name to “Dark Side of My Mind“. Its our shortest song at 3:34. We think its pretty close to done, however I say give it a listen and let us know what you think. Currently the song is in a ABCABC format, for those of you who are into, or want to get into songwriting.

Give us your feedback, and also what you think the song should be called.  (leave a comment below) As I said in my last post, you don’t have to be a musician to know whether or not you like something.

Over the course of the next few weeks im going to be building a collection of tunes called Keep Your Ear to the Door Vol. 3. Which is a collection of unrecorded songs and awesome jams that we tend to give away at shows. Vol 1 we made a few years back well before Vs Them and we used it as our demo. However I think you will enjoy this more. Check out the Download page to get the tracks as well. More to come soon.

Stem and Ila Mawana Part II

January 29, 2009 - 1:13 am 1 Comment

Here’s another great jam with Gian Paolo, the singer of Ila Mawana, and us.  If you liked the last tasty jam then you will like this.  This one is more of a straight forward reggae hip-hop from Stemawna. Yes, that is a combination of Stem and Ila Mawana, much like the Wonder Twins, where we say “Form of badass” and create a nice little one off that was a lot of fun to play.   Kind of like a experimental swinger couple that wants to get a friend involved every once in a while.

It starts off with a simple riff, rapping and vocals, and then eventually kicks up into super dance disco dance fever. In fact it swings so hard that the recorder eventually stops working and shuts down, although we kept going this recording ended early at around 12 minutes leaving the remaining jam to never be heard again. Give it a listen and I hope you enjoy.  That last bit before it stops is my favorite part.

Stem and Ila Mawana Together (try not to get too jealous)

December 31, 2008 - 12:30 am 2 Comments

Here’s another great jam with Gian Paolo, the singer of Ila Mawana. We just so happen to share a band room with these guys.  So, one day we were walking in and GP was just finishing up. As he was about to leave, we tossed the idea of working on something together and he decided to stay to jam out on a few random riffs. The result: five tasty jams, all of which have some nasty licks and riffs with AJ and GP going back and forth. On vocals GP was using a spiffy series of vocal effects which balanced Aj’s out quite nicely. This one is entitled “Taking Over”.
